META:

Chuckie.

CHUCKIE:

Yes, Mother?

META:

Did you have a gaod time at Jimmie's today?

CHUCKIE:

Yes, --

META:

Just yes? What did you do?

CHUCKIE:

Nothing.

META:

But darling. You were at Jimmie's home from lunch time until an hour ago, and it's -- it's almost flve-thirty. Surely you must have done something in all that time.

CHUCKIE:

We had lunch.

META:

What did you have?

CHUCKIE:

Just -- things.

META:

Don't you -- want to tell me about it, dear?

CHUCKIE:

There s nothing to tell.

META:

Oh I'm sure there must be. Did you play cowboy, Indians?

CHUCKIE; NO. I was making a puzzle.

META:

Oh? Of what, dear?

CHUCKIE:

I guess it was of the United States.

META:

What were Jimmie and Alvin doing?

CHUCKIE:

Playing around.

META:

You -- weren't playing with them?

CHUCKIE:

Sort of.

META:

Then you -- didn't really have a good time, did you.

CHUCKIE:

It was all right.

TED:

(AWAY) Good evening, Meta dear.

META:

Hello, darling.

TED:

How are you, son? (COMING UP)

CHUCKIE:

I'm all right, Dad, thank you.

TED:

Good.

META:

You're home rather early, aren't you?

TED:

Yes I am Meta. I thought it would be rather nice if the three of us were together a bit before dinner. You'd like that, wouldn't you, son?

CHUCKIE:

Yes,

TED:

I understand you were at a party today.

CHUCKIE:

It wasn't a party.

TED:

Oh, wasn't it?

CHUCKIE:

No sir. I want to Jimmia' s house for 1 unoh and stayed until Mother called for me.

TED:

Did you enjoy yourself7

CHUCKIE:

No sir.

TED:

Well why not?

CHUCKIE:

I don't like Jimmie.

META:

But he's a very nlce boy, Chuckie.

CHUCKIE:

He likes to fight. He -- wanted to hit me. I told him not to.

META:

Chuckie, why didn't you tell me that you didn't enjoy yourself?

CHUCKIE:

Because.

META:

I see. Pardon me, won't you?' I've some things to attend to.

TED:

Plesse, Meta dear, don't leave now. This is the time of day I planned we should spend with our son.

ANNCR:

There is nothing for you to do, Meta, but to remain in the room. But the words "our son" mock you, don't they. Ted might as well have said ''my son''-- words he will use shortly. We'll learn more about this in a moment.

TED:

I'm very surprised at you, Meta.

META:

Surprised? Why?

TED:

That you would give Chuckie the impression that you weren'tinterested in his activities today. I thought we had more or less agreed on your request to show the boy that we were, as you phrased it, a family. To literally walk out on him--

META:

Ted. When Chuckie and I returned from Jimmie's horne, Chuckie had nothing whatsoever to say about his visit. I waited fully an hour to question him, to let him know I was interested in what he had done. His -- negative reaction to my questions was discouraging to say the least. When -- you talked to him about his visit with Jimmie and Alvin you were given pretty straight answers. I had no idea that he had spend a miserable afternoon. The boy had completely shut me out of his life. He -- he won't even be honest with me.

TED:

I see.

META:

Do you? I don't know how much more I can take of this.

TED:

What do you mean by that remark?

META:

I don't know.

TED:

If I may venture an opinion ----

META:

Do by all means, Ted.

TED:

I don't think you make an effort to understand the child.

META:

Oh Ted, really.

TED:

I suppose that's difficult for any mother to admit, But my dear, you're like so many, many women - image makers.

META:

Would you be so kind as to speak words that I might be able to understand?

TED:

Well, women have certain set ideas, you know? -- as to how their children should act, react -- preconceived ideas, I should say. In dealing with a child one doesn't deal with ideas but rather with a personality.

META:

You're -- quite an authority on the subject, aren't you.

TED:

There t s no reason i'or you to be sarcastic. Each one of us is an individual, a personality. We can't all be treated alike. l've found, with Chuckie, that a very straightforward, honest approach is what he wants, what he expects.

META:

Do you really know what you're talking about?

TED:

Yes, I thInk I do. Chuckie isn't a problem child as you've attempted to paint him. He's perfectly normal.

META:

I don't think so. His peactions to me aren't normal, his reactions to children aren't normal, he's anti- social. And he's afraid, he's constantly afraid. The only reason he's honest with you is that he's afraid not to be. And as for any preconceived ideas, Ted, you've already molded Chuckie into what you think he should be, what you want him to be as he matures.

TED:

No, you're wrong, Meta. Would you -- like me to tell you what it is that disconcerts you as far as Chuckie is concerned? (SLIGHT PAUSE) He's so very much like me. He's unemotional, he dislikes demonstrations of any sort. He'd be honest with you if you'd permit him to be.

META:

You can -- sit there and -- say that to me?

TED:

Yes, of course, because it's true. You don't understand the child -- any more than you understand me.

META:

We aren't talking about you, Ted.

TED:

Chuckie and I have had a number of discussions regarding his boxing.

META:

Really?

TED:

He's -- consented to take boxing lessons.

META:

What did you do, bribe him? -- you who know how to deal with an individual, who understands your son so thoroughly.

TED:

Bribe him? I wouldn't use that word exactly. Reward would be a more appropriate word.

META:

Ted, why are you forcing the boy to do something he detests.

TED:

Because I know that altho he isn't consoious of it, be'd have liked nothing better than to hit back at Jimmie this afternoon when Jimmie hit him. But my son was afraid. I'm going to teach him to be -- unafraid.

META:

You're going to be -- very, very sorry for this.

TED:

What makes you think so?

META:

Let's call it a woman's intuitlon. You're going to regret the day you ever forced Chuckie to put on a boxlng glove.

TED:

I don't think so, in ract I'm sure I won't. Besides he agreed to take boxing lessons.

META:

At a price. What was the bribe, Ted?

TED:

It really wasn't too much. I told him I'd take him on a trip with me to tho High Sierras.

META:

When?

TED:

Very shortly.

META:

You're going to take him along on a vacation? What I mean is -- I'm not included in the trip?

TED:

Too rugged for you, my dear.

META:

Ted, you're not going to take Chuckie with you.

TED:

But I've already told the boy.

META:

I don't care what you told him.

TED:

But what possible objeotion can you have, Meta?

META:

You make that remark sound so -- very guileless, so innocent. I'm doing my level best to create some sort of a bond, a natural bond between a mother and a son and you -- you've planned to have the boy with you, alone. For how long?

TED:

Oh, a week, ten, days or so. It'll be good for him, Meta. He'll learn somethlng of the outdoors, a man's pattern of living. How many fathers would take that much interest in a six-year-old?

META:

He's too young to go on that sort of a trip.

TED:

I don't believe he is. Even you said, my dear, that Chuckie is mature for his years. I agree with you. He's most intelligent.

META:

But there's so much of the baby about him too that you refuse to recognize. Ted, what're you trying to do to the boy, destroy him, murder him?

TED:

Good heavens, Meta.

META:

That's possible, you know, to destroy a personality it's had a chance to develop.

TED:

That's a lot of sentimental nonsense, my dear. (SLIGHT PAUSE) We'll have great fun, Chuckie and I. And I'll tell you what I'll do. When we return, before school opens, if you wish to take Chuckie somewhere, it's perfectly agreeable with me.

META:

By that time you would have so dominated that boy that ---

TED:

Meta. Surely you're not -- jealous -- of me?

META:

No, Ted. If I thought for one moment that you had anything other than a -- distorted love for your son --. Ted, I beg of you not to go through with this trip.

TED:

But I've already promised the boy, and we're going.
